There are many, many alternative controller design theories that can be used to control a servo mechanism. Possibly there are too many. Here is a list of most of the techniques:

2. Velocity Feedback Control
3. Phase Lead Compensation
4. State Feedback Control
5. State Observer Implementation and Control
6. Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR)
